Nov 13, 2001/ FWD/ --- Alexander McQueen is coming to New York. The British designer's
first Big Apple outlet will open its doors next spring, carrying all of McQueen's women's
wear and accessories.
The store will be located on West 14th Street, not far from Jeffrey, the high-fashion
pioneer of the meatpacking district, which already carries the former Givenchy couturier's
ready-to-wear line.
An Alexander McQueen spokeswoman in London tells us that the new space will be "an exaggerated
version of the Tokyo store ... on a much larger scale. The Tokyo space is only 1,500 square
feet, this one is 4,000."
The Tokyo outlet, opened on September 20, was designed by William Russell, who will also be
responsible for its New York counterpart. Its curved walls, suspended columns and engraved
quotations from Dante's Inferno create an other-worldly setting for McQueen's often visionary
pieces.
The New York store will be McQueen's third. He opened his first freestanding store, a 2,000
square foot space, on London's Conduit Street two years ago.
Hopefully, the edgy Brit won't be lonely in the U.S. There's talk that McQueen's Gucci
comrade Stella McCartney will be setting up her shop nearby when she opens her first New
York store next year.
