Sep 20, 2001/ FWD/ --- The Comite Montaigne, an association of fashion houses with shops on the avenue
Montaigne and the rue Francois 1er, has announced that it will postpone its annual "Vendanges" celebration,
originally scheduled to take place tomorrow.
French socialites and fashionistas eagerly await the yearly wine and champagne tasting event that has become,
over the last 10 years, one big block party for the elite. The avenue Montaigne is closed to traffic so happy
partygoers can stroll from Chanel to Christian Dior to Valentino without having to look both ways as they sip
choice champagnes.
But this will not be the scene tomorrow.
In a note sent to every guest, the Comite attributes the postponement to "the recent events" and its commitment
to "reinforce the Vigipirate plan (the French anti-terrorist program)."
This is not the first time the Comite has been forced to change its plans for this celebration. In 1995, after
a number of bombings in Paris, the French government instigated the Vigipirate plan and the Comite canceled the
Vendanges event all together.
Don't throw out this year's invitation though; the Comite will meet later this month to set a new date for the
Vendanges.
