Paris, Oct 12, 2001/FWD/ --- LVMH's unprecedented decision to ban International Herald Tribune
fashion editor Suzy Menkes from attending the catwalk shows of its fashion houses is over. The
banishment lasted only 48 hours.
Menkes sat front-row Friday afternoon at the runway presentation of Louis Vuitton, one of a dozen
fashion houses controlled by LVMH, the world's largest luxury conglomerate.
"Suzy has always been a good friend," was all LVMH chairman and controlling shareholder Bernard
Arnault would say.
On Wednesday morning, LVMH banned Menkes, one of fashion's most respected critics, from its
remaining group shows in Paris, after taking exception to her review of the Christian Dior
spring/summer 2002 collection.
Arnault apparently informed Menkes of his decision himself. The move provoked uproar in fashion
circles, and was seen as a dangerous precedent, given LVMH's enormous financial, and advertising,
clout. The publicly traded company owns around 80 luxury brands.
Reached after the Vuitton show, Menkes said: "My only comment is what counts is what goes into
my column in the newspaper."
