Creme de la Mer Recruits Celebs to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

NEW YORK, Oct 3, 2002/ -- Estee Lauder is already thinking pink in October for breast cancer awareness month, and kicked off its third annual Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative yesterday (don't miss the rosy Empire State Building). Now, the beauty behemoth is leveraging its famed Crème de la Mer lotion to help benefit breast cancer research.

A bevy of big-name celebs who are big-time La Mer fans - Sharon Stone, Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, Brittany Murphy, the cast of "Friends" and the cast of "Sex and the City" - have autographed deluxe 16-ounce jars of the coveted cream. They are retailing at Bergdorf Goodman throughout October for $1,500 (up from the usual $1,000), with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit founded by Evelyn Lauder in 1993.

The celeb-signed jars are on view in Bergdorf's windows as well as at its La Mer counter, and can be purchased by calling the counter at 212.872.2739. There are only five though, so they're available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Since its 1965 launch, Crème de la Mer has become one of the most hyped creams on the beauty scene and has garnered a cult-like following among serious beauty buffs. Made from Pacific Ocean sea kelp and vitamins, each batch takes three to four months to produce, and each jar is filled by hand. It comes as no surprise then that just one ounce retails for $90.

Throughout October, Estee Lauder will also donate a percentage of sales from its regular two-ounce Crème de la Mers to the BCRF.

Other Lauder brands are also supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month with special products. A portion of proceeds from Clinique's limited edition "In the Pink" makeup set and Prescriptives limited edition Incredible Lipcolor shades are being donated to the BCRF, as are all proceeds from Bobbi Brown's best-selling Pink Sugar Shimmer Lip Gloss, offered in a special pink package this month. Stila has created a Breast Cancer Awareness Lip Glaze and the Estee Lauder brand is supporting the cause with its Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss.
