Narciso Rodriguez Signs Worldwide Beauty License with BPI
By: Godfrey Deeny
NEW YORK, Nov 13, 2001/ --- Narciso Rodriguez has signed a worldwide fragrance and cosmetics
license with Beaute Prestige International (BPI), the subsidiary of Shiseido which already
controls licenses with Jean-Paul Gaultier and Issey Miyake.
"I am thrilled to create my first fragrance with BPI. Their excellence and understanding of
a designer’s scent make it a very exciting collaboration for me," said Rodriguez, who
catapulted to fame by designing the wedding dress of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.
Known for his pure, architectural style and minimalist silhouette, New Jersey-born Rodriguez
was until this October the creative director of Loewe, the Spanish house owned by luxury
conglomerate LVMH.
"Narciso and BPI share the same values. Narciso has been sensitive to BPI’s very high respect
for designers. And we have been very sensitive to his spirit, his unique style and his
humanism," said BPI’s CEO Remy Gomez.
Gomez took over the reins at BPI last year, replacing Chantal Roos, who left to become
president of Yves Saint Laurent Beaute. Roos’ initial launches of the Miyake and Gaultier
perfumes are in Europe regarded as text book examples on how to develop and roll out scents
by fashion forward designers.
The contract with Rodriguez marks Gomez’s first deal since joining BPI. It will also give
BPI a geographic balance by uniting European, Japanese and American designers under one
umbrella.
Since leaving Loewe, Rodriguez has been concentrating his energies on his home base in New
York, though Aeffe in Italy produces his signature ready-to-wear collection.
