NEW YORK, Aug 15, 2002/ --- Ben Sherman is launching its women's collection in the U.S. for spring
2003.
Following the success of its men's sportswear collection in the American market - it more
than doubled its sales here last year -- the British brand is ready to expand stateside.
The London-based company has already sold its women's line in Europe for several seasons.
"We have pioneered the men's market here in the States, and are well-positioned to enter
the women's market and be very successful," says Michael Buckley, CEO of Ben Sherman North
America.
The women's range, a full line of sportswear that includes Ben Sherman's signature woven
shirts as well as a full denim collection, will be showcased at MAGIC and hit U.S. stores
in January.
A spokeswoman says major American retailers like Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters, who
currently carry the brand's men's offerings, are already interested in the collection.
The company is also looking to open its own retail outlets in New York and Los Angeles,
hopefully in the new year.
Ben Sherman started making his famous shirts from a small factory in Brighton in the late
1950s.
Along with Hush Puppies and pork pie hats, they became part of the Mod uniform of the mid-'60s.
Major music phenoms like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who all sported them and
solidified their must-have status.
The Ben Sherman brand is now the fourth largest casual wear brand in the UK.
