NEW YORK, Sep 11, 2003/ FW/ --- The first runway show does not start till Friday, Sep 12, but the
fashion crowd is already in New York as evidenced by the large crowd which gathered at the
W Hotel last night.
Hosted by W Hotels and Vogue, the 'Celebrate Fashion Spring 2004" party was so jam packed that
the receptionists (there were three) have to literally hold attendees at the door for fear of
the Fire Marshall rules.
As specified in the fire safety code, each room can only have a certain number of people inside.
If that number is exceeded, then you are in violation of the fire safety code.
"This is jam-packed," exclaimed a PR executive while on line for the open bar.
The room was so full that every little nook and cranny were occupied.
Fern Mallis, Executive Director of 7th on Sixth, organizer of New York Fashion Week held court
by the bar, not by choice but by neccessity.
There were so many well-wishers and congratulatory exchanges for the 10th anniversary of the
Tents, she just went with the flow of the crowd as it moved.
As already mentioned here at FW several times, Fern Mallis is the tireless Executive Director
who continuously attract big companies to sponsor New York Fashion Week.
Stan Herman of the CFDA, (who was also in the party), once said,
'Fern Mallis is a dynamic person.'
As the evening went on, more and more people gathered at the entrance. If not for NY City Mayor
Bloomberg's 'no smoking' policy in public places in New York, the crowd would have had
no way of getting in.
But attendees were going and out of the venue to go out and have a smoke, hence there was a
lively interchange of people in the party.
PR Executives, models, photographers and editors attended this well-heeled party.
And if you are wondering what the fashionistas are wearing - it's black!
Black continues to be the favorite of the fashion crowd. And on Friday, we will see
what Spring 2004 will bring.
Will black continue to be "black," or will there be a "new black?"
