Liz Jones Replaces Langmead at London Evening Standard
By: Jenny Bailly
NEW YORK, Sep 6, 2002/ --- Jeremy Langmead's shoes have already been filled at the London
Evening Standard.
British Marie Claire alum Liz Jones will be the new editor of the paper's Life & Style section.
Langmead was named editor-in-chief of Wallpaper yesterday.
During Jones' two years at Marie Claire - she left in March 2001 - circulation fell by 11
percent. In the summer of 2000, she attracted major media attention for the magazine with
a "body issue" that featured two covers - one picturing a full-figured, "normal" Sophie Dahl,
the other a "too thin" Pamela Anderson.
The editor, who has spoken openly about her own anorexia, was criticized by some for using
Marie Claire as a platform for a personal campaign against eating disorders.
After very vocally participating in the British government's think tank on body image,
eating disorders and the media, Jones attracted further press attention when she was
accused by the editors of four of Britain's leading fashion magazines -- Vogue, Elle,
Cosmopolitan and New Woman -- of using the situation as a "promotional tool."
Jones should be well-suited for her new role at The Standard though.
She says under her leadership she wants the Life & Style section to "make the headlines" -
something that she's certainly had experience with during her reign at Marie Claire.
Before joining the women's glossy, Jones spent 10 years at the Sunday Times, eventually
working as deputy editor of its Style section under Langmead.
Over the last year she has been working on a book, doing some TV work and freelancing for
The Guardian, The Observer, and The Standard - once again under Langmead.
Jones will begin her new job after her wedding next month.
