Kenneth Cole to Beam Up Summer Sales
By: Jenny Bailly
NEW YORK, June 27, 2002/ --- Kenneth Cole is hoping to beam up some new tech-savvy customers
this summer.
For one month, starting July 8, the retailer will team up with Palm, Inc. and TelMeMor-e
to feature hibeam stations at stores in Manhattan, Chicago and Las Vegas.
Shoppers will be able to point their Palms at an equipped Kenneth Cole New York store
window and download exclusive promotions and giveaways, as well as other custom applications,
like a Kenneth Cole store locator.
Although this isn't the first time hibeam stations have cropped up in major U.S. cities -
organizations from the Tribeca Film Festival to the Whitney Museum have already embraced
the technology - Kenneth Cole is one of the first fashion brands to get in on the action.
"Palm handheld technology is changing the way people buy the things they need.
The shopping experience is becoming more transparent and interactive," says Ken Wirt,
senior vice president of marketing at Palm, Inc.
"This new promotion at Kenneth Cole New York stores shows how Palm handhelds can be a
dynamic and fun way to retailers to communicate with customers."
Master of the pithy shoe pun, Kenneth Cole is also known for innovative marketing techniques,
like dropping 1,000 wallets -- stocked with discount and free gift coupons -- on the streets
of New York last April.
In the first quarter, Kenneth Cole Productions posted a 20 percent increase in net income,
to $5.5 million, but saw same-store sales drop more than 16 percent.
The company operates 79 retail stores, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this fall.
