Prince Charles Becomes Latest Celebrity Designer

LONDON, Aug 15, 2002/ --- Is Prince Charles a knight in shining armor for the British fashion
industry?
Duchy Originals -- the eco-friendly company that the future British monarch set up over a
decade ago - has just confirmed an unlikely fusion of fashion, farming and royalty:
Prince Charles is set to produce his own fashion label.
Musings in the British press this weekend on an intended "royal range of sweaters, scarves
and tweed suits" were dismissed as exaggerated though by Fiona Gately, a spokesperson for
Duchy Originals.
"Prince
Charles does have the intention of launching a fashion label next year; however, the
plans are in the very premature stage - any details in the press about the collection
were purely speculative," she told FWD.
His Royal Highness' rather unusual venture is said to stem from his "deep sense of obligation"
to tackle the crisis in agriculture that has arisen primarily from the dreaded foot-and-mouth
disease which devastated farming communities throughout Britain last year.
The organic sheep's wool to be used in the new clothing line will come from British farms
only and the profits will go to the Prince of Wales' Charitable Foundation.
Spokespersons for the prince were tight-lipped on whether the range would be classically
styled or have a leisurewear element. However, they did confirm that Prince Charles would
not be designing himself.
So what exactly can we expect this regalia to look like? If Charles is looking to be as
influential as his dapper, abdicated uncle Edward VIII - who introduced the world to casual
sportswear, suede shoes, the Windsor Knot and Wallis Simpson -- then he's going to have to
think further than twin-sets and tweed jackets.
Perhaps Vivienne Westwood could create a line of "God Save the Prince" t-shirts (safety pin
included)?
Or Alexander McQueen would be a wise choice for a capsule range of tartan bumster kilts --
just perfect for that bracing walk in the highlands.
