Former People No. 2 Takes Top Job at Rosie
By Jenny Bailly
NEW YORK, Jun 28, 2002/ --- Susan Toepfer, who ended an almost 15-year career at People when
Martha Nelson swooped in from InStyle to snag the top job there in February, has resurfaced
at Rosie.
Daniel Brewster, president and CEO of Rosie publisher Gruner + Jahr, announced that Toepfer
will be the new editor-in-chief of the magazine, effective July 8.
Toepfer replaces Cathy Cavender, who will be leaving the company after only a little more
than a year on the job.
Cavender oversaw the magazine's transition from McCall's to a Rosie O'Donnell vehicle in
spring 2001.
The new title flourished initially, but newsstand sales have fallen in recent months.
Gruner + Jahr hopes Toepfer will be able to bring them back up again with her People-trained
publishing savvy.
"Susan's editorial instincts earned her a reputation as someone who can deliver a big cover
story.
The success of Rosie will only be enhanced by Susan's sense of a magazine's power to inform
and entertain," said Brewster in his statement.
"I'm delighted to be joining such an exciting and growing company as Gruner + Jahr USA and
to be given the opportunity to take Rosie magazine to the next level of success," said Toepfer.
"Rosie has created a wonderful dialogue with women about what matters in their lives. It's
a dialogue filled with tremendous honesty, heart and humor. I can't wait to be part of this
conversation."
