Fashion Walk of Fame Gets New Stars

NEW YORK, Feb 26, 2002/ --- Eight New York designers including Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson and
Stephen Burrows have been added to the Garment District's Fashion Walk of Fame.
The honorees will each have a bronze and marble plaque featuring their name and an original
sketch. The plaques are embedded on the sidewalk along the Walk of Fame, on Fashion Avenue
between 42nd and 34th Streets.
This year's other inductees are Perry Ellis, Norma Kamali, Willi Smith, Lilly Dache and
Mainbocher.
The winners were selected by a board of editors, retailers and curators based on the criteria
that the designer has had a clear and significant New York presence, has owned his or her
business for at least 10 years and has been a moving force in the fashion industry.
The Fashion Walk of Fame was started by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District
in 2000. They honored eight designers that year and eight more in 2001. Ralph Lauren,
Calvin Klein, Bill Blass and Oscar de la Renta are among previous winners.
Barbara Randall, executive director of The Fashion Center, told FWD that the objective of
the Walk is two-fold: to celebrate top designers and provide a visitor amenity. The Fashion
District is conveniently located between two of New York's biggest tourist attractions,
Time Square and Macy's, and the idea was to create a walkway between the two that would
mark the presence of the Fashion District.
"There is no evidence of it except our buttons," Randall said.
Bad news for rising talents though: the Fashion Center feels that two dozen stars are
enough to line the Walk, so this year's batch of design stars will be the last.
