Auction of Audrey Hepburn's Wardrobe Raises $177,000 For UNICEF
By Timothy Hagy
Apr 24, 2003/ FW/ --- Sotheby's in New York was the site of "The Beauty of Compassion", a special evening featuring a cocktail reception, an exhibit on Audrey Hepburn's life and passions, and an auction of selected items from the Audrey Hepburn Estate, all followed by an exclusive dinner.
For Fashionista, the highlight of the evening was the auction of clothing, jewelry and sacks once belonging to the late actress. The sale brought in $177,000 from the 14 lots donated by her family. A crocodile Kelly sack with a matching pair of gloves sold for $36,000. The rose organza gown designed by Hubert de Givenchy for the film "Funny Face" (1957) went for $17,000. Louis Vuitton baggage and various photos were also put on the block.
The proceeds from the sale went to benefit "All Children In School", an Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund initiative benefiting the U.S. Fund for UNICEF educational programs. "All Children In School" is a ten-year campaign aimed at giving 120 million children in developing nations access to quality basic education, including the skills and knowledge they need to survive.
Audrey Hepburn is probably best known for her portrayal of Holly Golightly in the classic
1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's, a role that Truman Capote had originally envisioned for
Marilyn Monroe.
The petite brunette's rise to fame roughly paralleled that of Hubert de Givenchy, the designer with whom she is often associated, and with whom she was a life long friend.
Givenchy retired in 1992, selling his fashion house to the LVMH luxury conglomerate.
Audrey died on January 20, 1993 at her home in Tolochenaz, Switzerland.
