NEW YORK, Apr 22, 2007/ FW/ --- With obesity a growing problem in the U.S., fruit juices were mistakenly thought to be a factor in children becoming overweight. New research proves that 100% fruit juices are important in a balanced diet.
According to Dr. Theresa Nicklas, Baylor College of Medicine researcher, “100% percent juice consumption was not associated with overweight in children two to eleven years of age.”
“The average intake was about four ounces, which is within the current recommendation. A hundred percent juice was also a valuable contributor of nutrients in children’s diets. Bottom line is that it did not have an adverse effect on weight,” added Dr. Nicklas.
Dr. Nicklas also advised that if parents are concerned about their children’s weight, parents need to assess the child’s caloric intake and look at where most of the calories are coming from as well as look at their child’s physical activity level.
