NEW YORK, Apr 22, 2007/ MF/ --- Most consumers know they should be eating more fruits and vegetables, but more than 90% of both adults and children aren’t getting the recommended amount each day.
To meet the new dietary guidelines, most consumers will have to more than double the amount of fruits and vegetables that they currently consume – an important goal, as increased daily consumption of fruits and vegetables may help prevent many chronic diseases.
Introduced by the Produce for Better Health Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Fruits & Veggies—More Matters™ is a new national health initiative designed to encourage all Americans to eat more fruits and veggies, including fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and 100% juice.
This new public health initiative to increase fruit and vegetable consumption replaces the 5 A Day program, which will be phased out by the end of 2008.
The CDC says the eating more fruits and vegetables in place of high calorie, low nutrient foods may help with weight management. In addition, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables while staying physically active may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer, and keep the immune system healthy.
