Feb 28, 2002/ FWD/ --- It was a family affair today in Milan as Laura Biagiotti Roma - designed by Biagiotti and
her daughter, Lavinia Cigna - showed their fall 2002 collection in an intimate theatre to
a mostly local crowd.
The internationals have not yet arrived en masse for the ten-day fashion event that began
Feb 24.
Slow start notwithstanding, the Biagiotti Roma Roma show indicated that Milan fashion week
is gathering steam.
The warm reception that the collection received could have had something to do with the
mother-daughter duo's relative home court advantage. Or maybe it was due to the fierce
spirit of the new Biagotti, one the designers describe as "half romantic Valkyr (the warrior
maiden of Nordic mythology) and half tsarina of the snow."
The effect wasn't quite cutting edge, but it certainly wasn't one for shrinking violets.
And Biagiotti Roma masters knitwear with a refined poise that sets her apart from her
contemporaries.
The collection was a study in contrasts: denim mixed with knitwear; leather appliqués on knits and eveningwear; sarong-like skirts draped over pants. The mostly beige, brown, white, gray and sometimes pink looks had a tendency to look unwieldy, especially when layered.
But simple backless tops with leather straps or suspenders were seductive and sophisticated, and several pinstripe numbers, like a scoop neck corset top with a ruffled leather skirt and oversized belt, were smart and sexy. And knit dresses draped like shawls achieved the "tsarina of the snow" with a je ne sais quoi of mystery.
