MILAN, Mar 7, 2002/ FWD/ --- "I was thinking about all the great British women who live
in country houses with wonderful things in their attic, and how they got into the city
and look great in all their vintage," explained designer Christopher Bailey after
the presentation of the Burberry Prorsum collection in Milan Monday.
The invitation, which came in paisley, presaged much of the show, which featured the print
on cool cotton redingotes, excellent shearlings and burgundy high-collared shirts.
Bailey's clever approach to Burberry, as we've said before, is not to tap into its
Britishness, without focusing slavishly on youth or a particular cultural movement each
season.
Thus, '80s-style boots appear in an outfit featuring punkish pants.
Chris likes his models young, shaggy-haired and romantic, reminiscent of students in
the full flood of youthful optimism and conviction that they can make the world a better
place.
But above all, beautifully cool intellectuals.
His big idea for this collection was playing with pants by adding loops, bands and straps.
The idea was fresh and the pants looked cool. He also played with construction, making skirts
sort of upside down and connecting culottes with hooks and eyes, all of which worked.
"It started from the trench and placing the shoulder straps somewhere else and sort of went
on from there," Bailey smiled. The audience, after applauding enthusiastically, did too.
