MILAN, Jan 17, 2005/ FW/ --- Cheesecake and champagne, cold air to winter warmth with tunnels of light spelling out BURBERRY down a black smokey runway, for Burberry Prorsum designer Christopher Bailey’s 2005/06 autumn winter menswear collection.
Red mohair plaid scarves warmed the deck chairs and shoulders of fashions best as the Burberry boys walked dreamily dressed in college stripes, and plastic signature checked trenches.
Could Bailey have been rummaging through his 1970’s and 80’s closet as inspiration for his preppy Eaton boys? Thin cashmere cardigans with metallic lining and romantically patterned knitwear in bright yellow and black, along with bold check in red and green for pants, jackets and coats, floral prints on silky shirts and sleeveless sheepskin jackets are all part of next winters look.
But whatever his thinking, Bailey doesn’t seem to be able to make a false move, giving a collection all of his own; stylish, elegant and delicate for the poet of the 21st century.
He mixes transparency and plastic with the most classical tailoring for jackets and flat fronted trousers.
With attention to detail, jackets and coats are lined for warmth and at times the silhouette he creates for his men is so delicate it seems feminine with pleats and splits in the rear of winter coats and jackets that button up from the navel.
A dandy come back that has never really disappeared and one that Bailey has attempted for so long to keep alive, finally it has reared it head once more with men becoming not only more attentive in how they dress, but with new a found elegance that has its roots safely planted in tradition.
