MILAN Oct 3, 2003/ FW/ ---The English summer, the lightness and delicacy of a sun shower,
fresh and revitalising, inspired Christopher Bailey’s Burberry spring summer 2004 collection
shown last Wednesday here in Milan.
An all English show, beginning as Kate Moss returned for a one off , to open the show, wearing a sleeveless green top and knee length wide skirt, her blonde hair hung to her shoulders looking as cool and relaxed as though she’d just stepped out of the shower.
Bailey reworks the mackintosh, cutting and reducing, turning it into a monochrome bolero, until in the end all that remains are the storm flaps appearing like capes, wing like over loose tops.
Other than hints of the ‘Burberry’ plaid on the odd top, and the occasional stripe on pants and skirts, the new print is black on white or white on black blotchy rain splatters.
Researched simplicity and comfort are key focal points of the collection, such as taking signature individual elements such as the college scarf and including them in varying situations suggests versatility. Skirts are wide and fall just above the knee, shorts are sporty while gathers and ruffles both make appearances on tops and dresses
Wrap around summer dresses dance with the movement of the body in a light sea breeze, as comfort and ease take centre stage.
British is best when used as inspiration, especially by a Brit such as Bailey, striping back the layers to bare essentials and reworking successful principles making them fundamentals, a beautiful well thought out collection, simple is often best.
