Burberry MILAN, Sep 25, 2006/ FW/ --- Burberry this season was filled with large volumes, oversized purses, baby doll dresses, and beautiful embellishments. With patent leather pastels to matte black and white, the collection had a beautiful range of colors and textures. The mainly full and oversized silhouette was very 70’s inspired, creating contrast with the modern fabrics and finishing techniques.

This season for Burberry, Christopher Bailey focused on outerwear fabric as inspiration. He used a lot of fabrics that were durable and waterproof in his designs. Yet, a common eye wouldn’t know this when they see the beautiful dresses and coats that he presented.

The collection consisted of a range of monochromatic colors that really popped in texture rather then shades of color.

Python print jackets were paired with black contrasting details like a patent leather belt that cinched right above the waist. Large ropes tied together a three quarter length cream coat, at the waist and elbows.

The contrast of the seemingly rough rope counterbalance the smooth folds created by the gathers. Jackets had short sleeves from three-quarter length to mid-thigh the sleeves ended a good bit before the wrist. Sometimes, they had puff sleeves where the puff started mid arm elongating the arm instead of accentuating the shoulders.

Embellishments were intricate and astonishing. Bailey used a range of large glass beads, oversized sequins and exaggerated metal rivets to add texture to the collection. One jacket sparkled and shimmered while every inch was covered with large amber colored glass beads.

The light reflective qualities were the same in the massive metal embellishments. A mix between amour and jewels large metal rivets covered the tops of dresses, the hemlines of skirts and the cuffs of jackets. Paired with technologically advanced fabrics the idea was very futuristic while keeping to traditional cuts and tailoring.

Baby doll dresses with full skirts were paired with oversized silver bags and black headbands. The few prints were a simple mix between batik and tie-dye that almost seamed textural in the tone range of colors. Accessories were simple and mainly in silver, black and cream. The shoes were black or cream vinyl rounded toe ankle boots or strappy sandals.

Burberry always seems to make the classic and traditional new. They have an ageless customer that will go from grandma to granddaughter with no problems. Few designers can do this, while at the same time still being fashion forward and a bit avant-garde, but Burberry season after season pull this off.
