David Cardona: L.A.'s Rising Star
By: Lucy Oblena
LOS ANGELES, Apr 3, 2003/ FW/ --- David Cardona became a household word in
2000 when he won an EMMY Award for Best Costume Design for his work on
"Cher: Live in Las Vegas."
But the Columbian-born, Los Angeles-raised designer has been creating a buzz
in the fashion world long before that.
David Cardona, a former aircraft designer for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation,
honed is clothes-designing skills under Richard Tyler where he worked for 5 years.
In 1998, David Cardona, together with John Bowman, founder of the high-end leather and
jewelry label Chrome Hearts, formed Bowman Cardona, the parent company of the David
Cardona label.
That same year, David Cardona was commissioned to design the stage clothing for Janet
Jackson’s world tour. (He will be asked again in 2001.)
With the Janet Jackson commission, David Cardona's plane has taken off. Designing
for of pop music’s most impressive individuals, his client list includes Backstreet Boys,
Carlos Santana, k.d. lang, Tom Petty, Yolanda Adams, Britney Spears, Luther Vandross
and Natalie Cole.
Showing his collections at L.A. Fashion Week, David Cardona David continues to reaffirm
his vision of what the modern woman should wear each season.
Known for his use of luxurious fabric and leather, David designs both ready-to-wear as well
as individual pieces for custom clients.
Each garment is entirely hand-tailored and lined with silk satin. Jackets have a
complete hand-applied canvas interior; pants are tailored much the way men’s trousers are,
affording a perfect fit that feels constructed yet comfortable.
It is in the details however that the craftsmanship is most evident: from decorative
seaming to custom made buffalo horn buttons.
All buttonholes on jackets and blazers are functional and hand sewn with silk thread.
In 2000 David Cardona received the MODA Award for fashion design excellence and was
nominated for Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award in 2002.
In April 2003, he was named Womenswear Design Chief for Milan-based Cerruti.
