Paris, Oct 10, 2001/ FWD/ --- Emanuel Ungaro's announcement that Gianbattista Valli will
be the sole creative director for the label’s ready-to-wear, diffusion and accessory lines
is no great shakes to the industry.
The young designer, who has been creative director since 1998, was hired to help rejuvenate
the house and expand Emanuel Ungaro internationally. On the other hand, Ungaro, the son
of a tailor, will concentrate on his first love, haute couture.
This collection may be less colorful than his last spring one, but all the trademark Ungaro
detailing was in place: glass beading, ribbons, appliqués and sparkles.
The Ungaro woman is not the type to slip into a party unnoticed; a flamboyant entry is
almost always the case. Whether it's at an afternoon affair in a plum satin suit with a
wide ribbon belt, or at a glitzy bash in a draping, curve-enhancing, beaded coral silk
chiffon dress, she'll cause a stir.
There were some great silk chiffon blouses, linen tops and boleros in beige and plum, and,
as usual, a slew of sensational evening dresses that make Liz Hurley, Whitney Houston and
Sharon Stone diehard fans.
There were a few no-nos in the collection: the tight black tulle-covered jeans were passé and
tacky, a coral linen coat and pants were similarly unstylish, and many of the pants with
front pleats and unflattering cuts also looked dated.
