MILAN, Feb 20, 2007/ FW/ --- Art Moderne, Modernistic, Jazz Pattern, Skyscraper Modern may seem like strange terms but in reality they all refer to the same thing which also happens to be Etro’s Autumn Winter inspiration.
Traces of Art Deco and its geometrical, decorative art movement could be seen through out the Autumn Winter 2007/8 collection. Inspired by artist and designers of that time period Etro was able to put together a ultra-sophisticated enchanting look.
With a geometric runway and Parisian music, the models criss-crossed there way to the catwalk. Colors in general were subtle mineral colors with touches of brightness.
Fabrics were about prints and embellishments. Sequins adorned a jacket much like the designs on Jean Dunand’s vases, zig zagging asymmetrically. The look was classic intellectual.
The prints were like the paintings of Kazimir Malevich or Gustave Klimt, mixing geometric and organic shapes to create a artistic print. The bold shapes were down played by the mild colors and then up played by the ornate embellishments.
Outfits were at times A-sexual, playing with classic men’s attire without taking away the femininity. The Etro women is very sensual but she implies it rather then flaunts it.
Suspenders were taken as inspiration for jeweled embellishments. The were encrusted with rhinestone and bead, and at times a blend between jewelry and garment details.
The Silhouettes were slim and subtle and following to the Art Deco theme, although pieces were rounded there were never excessive curves. Belts were and important accessories playing many different roles in many different forms.
Double buckled belts cinched in high-wasted pants, as thinner belts cinched closed knits. One belt even had a military inspired over the shoulder piece.
The collection was a beautiful mix of Parisian Art Deco Stylistic influence and the evoliving presence. Though the inspiration was strong the pieces were made for the modern woman. If your going for ultra-sophistcation and charm Etro did a good example to follow.
