LOS ANGELES, Nov 2, 2003/ FW/ --- New York might not be the lone U.S. city competing with
Paris and Rome for couture pieces.
Evelina Galli presented sexy, dramatic and charming, one-of-a-kind garments last Thursday at the LA Standard’s Space that can be the seed of a thriving couture industry in the City of Angels.
Showing only about a dozen creations, Evelina Galli redefined the meaning of couture.
Using the traditional craft
of crochet and knitting, the designer wove huge wraps that were big enough to cover the whole body.
It took more than a week to crochet the entrance making "Grapevine" jacket.
Iridescent paint was used to draw silhouettes of faces and flowers. Before you say, “I can do that at home,” think twice.
The detailing is so beautiful, it was truly a work of art and not you average arts and
crafts piece.
Local L.A. artist Alexandra handpainted all the silk dresses. Handpainted and beaded, an average
of 20 hours was spent creating each one of the dresses.
Galli also used a wide array of fabric, from silk to denim. With expert draping technique, silk had a lot of volume and the denim looked soft.
Check out the denim bustier before Madonna or Britney Spears spot them. It’s worth an MTV video!
Though the pieces might not be grand enough for the Oscar red carpet, it’s easy enough to imagine them being on the back of a celebrity at the SAG Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards.
