Milan, Sep 29, 2001/ FWD/ --- There’s no doubt that it’s going to be a rock’n’roll spring/summer 2002 for
Exte, shown in Milan last night.
The first part of the collection was heavily influenced by rock icons Jimmy Hendrix and Prince and featured
ruffle shirts open to the navel, tight black pants with zipper tabs in the shape of plectrums, skintight lace
tops, and boots with front gaps and serious spike heels. Denim was stonewashed and embroidered, and piece
after piece were slashed with leather strapping.
Hair was teased into a “I’m up for a seriously long night” look, and the makeup was dark, hard and just
jam-packed with attitude.
The next segment of the collection left the black and white rock star looks behind and moved on to crazier
color spectrums. Alek Wek came down the runway in head-to-toe green - hat, boots and all. Pants, dresses, minis
and shirts were shown in the same bubble gum pink. Coordination didn’t end there: even the teeny tiny plunge
neck swimsuits were paired with brightly colored embroidered belts and matching stilettos. The change in tone
was interesting, if somewhat disjointed.
Brit designer Antonio Berardi is known for his experimental tendencies - he was taught by John Galliano after
all. And it showed in this collection. What the entire line did have in common was body clinging fabrics and
revealing cuts. It wasn’t pretty, but it was seriously sexy.
