Genny is the brainchild of Arnaldo Girombelli who named the label after his eldest daughter. The firm started in 1961 and it was one of the first who recognized the genius of Gianni Versace who was at that time was a rising young designer. The collaboration between Genny and Gianni Versace lasted until 1994.

Antonio Girombelli died in 1980 and his wife Donatella Girombelli who has always been part of the creative process and the management of the business took over the company.

The Genny woman is defined as self-confident, refined and elegant. Known for its use of luxury fabrics, Genny has a loyal following among the fashion elite. //Boyd Davis

Genny: Casual Spring

Milan, Oct 1, 2001/ FWD/ --- To a crowd that, by the time the first look came down the runway, had waited nearly an hour – putting it at T-30 and counting until Armani’s show - Genny presented, for the most part, a concise, casual Spring 2002 collection for that working woman bound for a weekend in Connecticut.

Though there was nothing exceptionally directional or overly memorable in the mass of pleated, two-tone tennis skirts, frilly blouses, simple button downs, long, bathrobe-belted sweaters, and pantsuits with smaller cut jackets in solids and polka-dots, there were some pleasantly mediocre moments: a sexy but smart backless tuxedo-vest blouse, a sweet (albeit unoriginal) French sailor stripe sweater, a bold pair of well-cut blue and white floral print pants, and a standout lightweight gold cardigan wrap.

And then, unfortunately, there were the complete misses: a series of irridescent floral-print chiffon pieces which stuck out like a sore thumb against the rest of the collection, as well as appearing a bit gaudy, especially when paired with a gold skirt. And a few of the colors were a bit off. Is there really a woman out there who can wear watermelon pink or canary yellow well? Even Karolina Kurkova looked a bit funny in a pantsuit of the latter hue.

But if the applause at the end of the show sounded a bit weak, it could legitimately have had something to do with the mass exodus of editors, anxious to get to Armani.
