Gianfranco Ferre: Classy Clothes for Real Men

Milan, Jun 19, 2002/FWD/ --- In one of his best collections in several years, Gianfranco
Ferre seemed to sum up the new mood in Italian men's fashion -- real clothes for real men,
as the dour economic climate and the war on terrorism have confronted the industry with a
major reality check.
Not that Gianfranco played it safe. He opened with a group of inventive chalk-stripe suits
and jackets, which, though padded, never looked clunky.
His suits were nipped in at the waist and broad at the shoulder, with peg-leg pants and big
turn-ups.
Dapper, with just the right amount of dash, they were some of the best seen all week in Milan
A squadron of classy top coats in padded nylon, cashmere and herringbone wool, some with mink
collars, were distinguished and fitted right in with the new formality the current season has
emphasized.
Gianfranco also subtly played around with piping, sending out a couple of jackets with
“Three Men in a Boat” trim and Edwardian silhouette.
Thankfully, the show was also free of the baroque self-indulgence that has marred some of
Ferre's recent collections, except for a middle section that included a splotchy yellow suit
that screamed to be edited out.
But apart from this minor transgression, the collection marked a return to form for
Gianfranco, on this day an unquestioned master of tailoring and style.
