DALLAS, May 9, 2007/ FW/ --- Wearable and commercially viable, the Fall 2007 Guy Laroche collection fell into the fashion trap of the 1980s with its silk jersey, big collars and the excess associated with the decade.
It’s not to say that it was not a good collection. In fact, there are a lot of things going for it. There’s the gray sweater dress that is buttoned from the neck to the hemline and trimmed with fur for a luxe look. This will go well with the college coeds.
And of course, there is the cashmere turtleneck sweater dress with a banded hemline, teamed with a coat made from the same material. Again, college coeds would just love to get a hold of this one.
And for the more sophisticated, there is the lavender cable knit shawl that is oversized. It’s great for city dressing from New York to Los Angeles.
What is missing is the heat that Guy Laroche collections usually generate. When the audience and the clientele are used to spectacular, a ‘good collection’ just does not cut it. And, somehow, it just gets lost in the grand scheme of things and easily forgotten.
But, don’t despair. There is hope yet. This is the only second collection for the current Guy Laroche designer and he is slowly beginning to understand the Guy Laroche DNA, which is all about masterful execution of tailoring techniques such as cutting and draping.
The Grecian-inspired gowns adorned with ruching show promise. The short-cropped jacket paired with a white shirt and loose fitting pants will also find its way into a woman’s wardrobe.
