Paris, Oct 9, 2001/ FWD/ --- There was a packed house Tuesday for the presentation of the
spring 2002 collection of Jose Enrique Ona Selfa, the Hispano-Belgian designer recently hired
as creative director of the venerable Spanish luxury house Loewe.
The curious stood four deep at the sides of the delightfully atmospheric 18th century room
with views onto a Gothic church where the show was staged.
Justifying his reputation as a nonconformist, Ona Selfa had a catwalk of earth and leaves
laid on the floor, therefore earning the visible ire of several catwalkers, who tripped over
small branches.
The collection itself had considerable charm. Ona Selfa is an accomplished cutter, who
clearly has an original sensibility.
His opening bursts of ruffled and layered beige flamenco
dresses were spruce yet sexy.
He favors a trim silhouette, accentuated by high collars and
figure-hugging jackets.
Nearly all the time, this was a flattering shape.
The Brussels born designer also sent out sleek, commercial perforated knits and a slew of
mannish shirts with French cuffs that were surefire winners.
There were a few clunkers -- a pink linen pantsuit with huge slashes, to cite one -- but
overall this was an impressive performance from Ona Selfa, especially considering this was
only his third collection.
The show ended to loud, though hardly cacophonous applause. Anyway, the real test will
come next March when he presents his first collection for Loewe. Until then, the jury is
still out.
