MILAN, Jun 28, 2006/ FW/ --- The pink tee asking the question ‘Who The F*** Is John Richmond?’ summarized John Richmond’s Spring 2007 menswear collection which, with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, the designer figuratively bared his soul on the runway.
Richmond who is known for his penchant for rock & roll and a rebellious attitude in his sharply tailored designs showed an eclectic collection with himself as the thread the binds.
Opening with a series of white outfits that ranged from formal suits to varsity jackets and tank tops that bear an embossed John Richmond logo, it was almost reminiscent of Elvis, except that the models were all wearing necklaces that says ‘Skull.’
Hence, instead of thinking of Graceland, one starts thinking of Goth, but then Richmond changed tempo and followed it with blouson with openwork beading, cardigans and team Richmond jerseys, taking the audience from Las Vegas to the college campus.
Perhaps, Richmond was thinking of 1960s UC Berkeley or Stanford, about the same time that the hippie movement was born. Tie-dyed shirts and cardigans and striped trousers, pants and jackets. Hmm… are we back in London’s mod era?
Still, the skull was present anywhere and any time frame that John Richmond chose to visit. The skull was represented as a team name, as a buckle and as an adornment on jackets.
It was almost a logo fest, with the John Richmond crest, ‘skulls’ either written or carved, and the JR logo worn as a necklace or silk-screened.
It was a wild roller-coaster ride, something that John Richmond’s fans have come to expect. There were definitely a lot of covetable pieces, like the gray leather bomber jacket, the sharply tailored 3-piece suits and snug fitting shirt in black voile decorated with aluminum washers.
The accessories were must-haves: the sneakers with colors ranging from red, green, white, and gold, the belts and buckles and if you are into Goth, the necklace with a skull charm.
John Richmond might be introducing himself to the audience, but to use a cliché, ‘You got me at hello!’
