PARIS, Oct 7, 2007 / FW / --- In what is perhaps the happiest moment of the Paris season, it was a big celebration at Lanvin this afternoon complete with old-fashioned light bulbs that spelled the name LANVIN as Alber Elbaz feted his old boss, Yves Saint Laurent.
Fashionistas know that Alber Elbaz was the designer of YSL Rive Gauche when it was under the helm of Mr. Saint Laurent. When the House of Yves Saint Laurent changed hands, Elbaz left and had a short stint in the Milanese maison Krizia Top before being appointed Creative Director of Lanvin after it was acquired in 2001 by an investor group led by Shaw-Lan Wang, a Taiwanese media baroness.
And, it was a match made in heaven, as the saying goes… with Elbaz taking Lanvin to new heights, as the label became the chicest of the chic since the Israeli-American designer debut during the Fall 2002 season.
Six years had passed since then, and Alber Elbaz had created different themes for the past 12 seasons. But, it has never been as poignant and sweet as this. If clothes can talk, then they will say that there is so much love and tenderness that went with the creation of this collection; because that is exactly what the audience felt to the point that when the designer came out to take his bow, he received a standing ovation for FIVE minutes!
So, in the tradition of the famous French couturier, Alber Elbaz sent day dresses and evening gowns, plus the celebrated tuxedo for women. And, if you are wondering if it was just a copy of what had Mr. Saint Laurent had done, it is definitely not!
Alber Elbaz is a master designer and tailor himself, so the Lanvin code and the designer’s trademark cut and techniques were seen in the collection. It was the spirit of Yves Saint Laurent that was present in the ruffled frocks, flowing gowns and ruche cocktail dresses.
Prominent this season is the costume jewelry that mixed ethnic materials with semi-precious stones. Proposed to be worn with almost every outfit that were shown, it has become the season must-have from Lanvin.
