LOS ANGELES, Nov 1, 2003/ FW/ --- With the models’ hair swept up and their make up resembling a lightning, very similar to the band KISS, the Maggie Barry Company’s runway show at Smashbox turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
The show notes did not give any inkling about the show. Except for credits, the models names and the sponsors of the show, it only gave the show title, “Stardust on Reality.”
It was all about 1980s punk rock, captured and redone to be elegant and fun at the same time.
Maggie Barry designers sent mostly evening dresses with a few pieces that can be used for daytime wear.
Most people piece was the golden yellow cocktail dress embellished with steel rivets that made it look elegant and edgy at the same time.
There were a lot of ruching in the body hugging and shoulder-baring cocktail dresses, which dominated the collection. The emphasis was on the shoulder with their strapless, halter, one-shoulder or spaghetti-strap creations.
Although the 1980s influence was dominant, there were some pieces that are reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent’s use of geometric shapes in garment construction.
Hose were either fishnet or colored. Note of interest are the plastic stiletto booties with prints. Worn with a formal outfit, it gave a youthful aura in the total look.
This collection is totally L.A. --- fun, carefree with a dash of elegance.
