Mariella Burani: Curves and Glamour
By Heather O'Brian
MILAN, Mar 5, 2002/ FWD/ --- Curvaceous Sicilian actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta got plenty of
whistles from a crowd of appreciative photographers as she slowly sidled down the catwalk to kick off the presentation
of the Mariella Burani collection.
Cucinotta, better know in the U.S. as the Bond Girl in the 007 movie "The World is Not Enough,"
was dressed in a long black silky dress with a bustier top and had fur wrapped around her bare
shoulders.
The look was topped off with long black gloves in the style of Rita Hayworth.
Much of the collection seemed to take inspiration from the glamour of Old Hollywood, a feeling
that was heightened by the movie-set atmosphere of the catwalk.
The background depicted a road twisting into the horizon and brought to mind Claudette Colbert
and Clark Gable hitching a ride in "It Happened One Night."
Dresses and skirts dominated the collection, which was almost entirely for evening, with the
exception of a few '30s-style suits with high collars.
Cuts were generally tight to the body; only occasionally did the silky, satiny or velvety
dresses flounce a bit too much.
In terms of color, Burani used quite a bit of black and white in solids, along with her
signature floral prints.
The clothes were accessorized with hats, gloves and knee-high black stockings, further
completing the movie-star look.
"I don't follow trends, but my emotions and what I like," Mariella Burani said backstage
after the show.
