MILAN, Mar 7, 2002/ FWD/ --- If ever you are troubled by the eternal verities and
perturbed by a certain ennui, a good antidote is to attend a Marni collection, which never
lacks for optimism.
The fall-winter 2002 collection Marni presented Monday morning had the usual quotient of
joie de vivre, and some fine haute hippie clothes - a look the label's designer Consuelo
Castiglioni defined as "couture gypsy."
Marni's ability to cheer up the season was doubly impressive because the show was staged at
9pm before a huge squad of bleary-eyed editors, few of whom looked at all enthusiastic.
In a collection that called to mind Ali McGraw in full flower-power mode, Castiglioni opened
with some cool little jean jackets in chocolate suede.
Every flap and edge had colorful piping, which was true of most of the outfits, and little
knitted caps were trimmed with colorful buttons.
Marni always shows men and women together, and often attires the two sexes in the same fabric,
like a clownish patchwork cotton in a jumpsuit for the girls and a jokey shirt for the boys.
Marni of late has a lived-in look, where cottons come battered and washed and tweeds a little
crumpled.
Marni is one of Italy's greatest fur resources, and the few that reached the catwalk were
uniformly good.
Best of all were a couple of woven mink capes were the herringbone pattern was deliberately
apparent.
The overall look, though hippie, was pretty hot and alluring.
A finale of chiffon dresses with askew mini-tails was sexy without being cheap.
Just like dear Ali.
