Richard Edwards: Surgical Chic

Milan, Jun 28, 2001/FWD/ --- The sound of an operating room's breathing apparatus opened
the Richard Edwards catwalk show, as the young American design duo finished off the Milan
season with an impressive exploration into surgical chic.
Using an almost exclusively mono-color palette and tweaking practically every garment with
clever detailing, the collection was a worthy finale to the Italian men's runway week.
Edward Pavlick and Richard Bengtsson's cleverest ideas involved the torso, in particular
some great white shirts with a sunburst of darts, or a fitted black leather jerkin with
a web of Spiderman-like darts. Simple T-shirts were given a fresh spin with slick bands
across the biceps.
The pair played with the waistline, over tops with double layers around the stomach and
high dandified pants. They also substituted laces for ribbons, giving the clothes an
eccentrically romantic air.
But the key to this collection was the cut and silhouette, which were both modern and
flattering. At the end of a long week in steamy Milan, this show could easily have lost
the attention of tired buyers and critics. Instead it absorbed attention, which was
probably the finest compliment the duo could have received.
