A Name For Two People
By: Boyd Davis
"Two heads are better than one," goes an old saying. Add to that, "one name
for two people is easier to remember."
Richard Bengstsson and Edward Pavlick decided to take their first names to create Richard
Edwards, a label which is a product of both their talents. They have very dissimilar backgrounds,
Bengstsson hailing from Sweden and Pavlick a native of New Jersey.
Both were trained to be designers, but for two different things. Bengstsson studied fashion
design while Pavlick studied Industrial Design, specializing in pharmaceutical and bioresearch.
They met due to a simple twist of fate - Richard Bengstsson moved to New York, which is literally
and figuratively Edward Pavlick's playground and turf. And Richard Edwards was born!
They started as menswear designer with their Holiday Shirt collection in 1993. They debuted at the
catwalk during the Fall 1995 season. Five years later, they dabbed in womenswear and started to
show their collection during the Fall 2001 season.
The duo had been showing at Milan Fashion Week Menswear show since 1999 and debuted their
womenswear collection in Paris.
