Paris, Oct 5, 2001/ FW/ --- Tom Van Lingen is one of a growing list of Belgian designers
showing in Paris, and with his superb show on Friday is certainly making a name for himself
here.
To background house music of crystal chimes mixing with piano, an enthusiastic and young
audience filed into the hall to find pink teddy bears awaiting them on each seat.
And the prop was a hit, sending guests and photographers alike dashing to grab them up.
The collection, like the guest list, took a young, fresh look.
Light textured materials flowed in champagne and pink, while gossamer crochet fell
like spider webs in the light.
There were tones in pale pink, beige and cream, as well as bright hot rose and fuchsia.
A trio of suits featured fabric painted blue and black in remarkable abstract patterns,
an effect that resembled a Jackson Pollak original.
One particularly delightful dress was strung together with beads and then covered with what
appeared to be wilted hibiscus blossoms.
The innovative design hinted at haute couture, and certainly set Mr. Van Lingen's talents
on a higher platform than has been seen elsewhere from young designers this season.
The look was organic chic, and went the full range from completely wearable day clothes,
to dresses fit for a sparkling party.
