Burberry ProrsumMILAN, Feb 21, 2008 / FW/ — Powered by the same creative juices the he used for menswear, Christopher Bailey was once again inspired by English artist L.S. Lowry, sending a collection that is dark yet vibrant as the unusual combination of olive, copper, Prussian blue, black and grey turned out to be a noble translation of one artwork to another.

Famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of northern England during the early 20th century, L.S. Lowry is best known for urban landscapes people with many human figures usually presented as matchstick men.  He tended to paint these in drab colors, thus explaining Bailey’s atypical choice of a color palette for the collection.

The first half were almost minimalist, where cut and tailoring were more important than embellishments, like the 12-button dark beige trench coat or the ruche sleeve coat. Bailey also proposed tiered dresses and tulip skirts, together with tweed and jacquard coats.

Somewhere after halftime, Bailey changed the tempo and sent trench coats made of “feathers,” some even in leather. Adorned with oversized necklaces and paired with handbags and wristbands plastered in 2-inch spikes, the atmosphere changed from minimalist to avant-garde.

L.S. Lowry’s matchstick men were no match (pun intended) to these chic chicks in feathers!
