MILAN, Feb 23, 2008 / FW/ — At Moschino Cheap & Chic, there was a t-shirt with a picture of a woman with flowers sprouting from her head and the sentence ‘I have a lot on my mind’ written below it. And somehow, that summed up the current world situation – so many things happening at the same time and we have to deal with it.
In the U.S., the primaries are in full swing with Clinton and Obama on a head-to-head competition for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. In France, President Sarkozy’s personal life, i.e., getting divorced and remarrying while in office is not just tabloid fodder, but has become part of the coverage of major Paris dailies. A very weak U.S. dollar and a very strong euro against all major world currencies do not bode well with the luxury industry, especially the European fashion houses.
The atmosphere in Milan is upbeat but lacks its usual exuberance. Like what Rosella Jardini, Creative Director for Moschino Cheap & Chic said on the runway, ‘I have a lot of my mind,’ that is also the general feeling in Milan.
Yet, like almost everyone in Milan, the current world challenges is not an excuse to create a bad collection. Hence, Jardini sent on the runway one of the most refined and polished collection she had done in recent memory.
Knee-high boots, multi-color beading as adornments, slouchy pants and A-line coats – it’s a little bit eclectic but still a very directional collection.
