Javier Mateo
London Bureau Chief & Photography Director
Javier Mateo began his career as a photo-journalist for the EFE Agency (Europe Press) in 1990.
After working in his native city of Logrono (North Spain) for two years, he decided to put up his
own studio specializing in large format camera doing still life photography of Spain's wine country.
In 1995, feeling footloose and bored of the small city life, Javier Mateo moved to Madrid.
He still worked on still-life and portraits and got involved with fashion photography seriouly. He
received editorial jobs from GQ Spain and Spanish magazines. He also started shooting runway
shows and fashion models.
Javier Mateo moved to London in March 1998, and became a full-time fashion photographer. His photographs
were published at Cosmopolitan, Pure and 40 Degrees. He started using digital cameras, first out of
curiosity and later with the better digital cameras coming out of the market, Javier started using it
more often than his still film cameras.
Javier Mateo has not forgotten his roots as a photo-journalist and he still do some journalism jobs for
Spanish newspapers on the side.
