How Low Can You Go? Lee Cooper Introduces "Butt Couture"
By: Jenny Bailly

Denim NEW YORK, Sep 10, 2001 / -- Levi's is promoting the season's must-have low-rise jeans with ads that feature vocal belly buttons crooning their "coming out" to the world.

But UK jeans manufacturer Lee Cooper has taken the trend a step further, as it lets the posterior enjoy some attention too.

The retailer's "Butt Couture" line hits UK stores this month. The loose-cut lightweight denim jeans are designed with a gap between the waistband and the pants, creating a look that the Brits describe as "builder's bum."

In the early '90s, Alexander McQueen first brought this new breed of cleavage to our attention with his "bumsters." The revealing pants made a name for the then-obscure designer, but didn't really transition to the sidewalks. The concept held on though, and Frankie B. introduced its trademark denim and Lycra jeans with a dangerously low three-inch rise last fall.

But now, Butt Couture has brought a daring "peek-a-boo" effect to the style, adding a new twist to a look traditionally reserved for the proverbial plumber.
