The Bag to Have: B.E. 468

Dec 29, 2002/ FW/ --- B.E. 468 did not exist two years ago. The reason, business and design partners David Bracher and Richard Emden have not created the accessories line yet.

And when they did they created a buzz in the bag business that in less than two years, the duo are selling to stores in "every main, key country in the world" according to Emden, including such names as Barneys, Fred Segal, Browns and Harvey Nichols.

Why are these bags so hot that stars like Madonna, Kylie Minogue and David Beckham have been seen sporting them?

B.E. 468 started as a novelty handmade leather bags. Design inspirations come the most unexpected places, like a part of a duck's anatomy, or from popular movies like Space Invaders, or from video games like Pac Man.

Bags come embellished with leather flowers, solid silver studding, appliqués or almost anything or everything.

And the latest that has come out for their atelier - the irreverent 'breast bag'.

"The snug-fitting bag has a strap designed around a bra that holds the curvy bag - the breast, hence the name Breast Bag", Emden explained.

The bags have familiar shapes, yet unique - a paradox in a certain way. And with the items retailing from $200-$300, these bags are simply affordable.

The design duo are not simply designers (their design qualifications are impressive). They are also entrapreneurs.

Richard Emdem worked as visual merchandiser at Selfridges and moved on to be an accessories designer for the Arcadia Group.

David Bracher was one of the head designers for Erickson Beamon for eight years.

Combining their talents and financial resources, Emdem and Bracher self-financed the venture.

Sourcing their stiff leather in Germany and Italy, the duo do most of their works in their studio, and has a turn-around time of six weeks.

And what are their plans for the future?

Opening their own stores in London which will see all their accessories line. They are also planning to expand their business to include furniture and home ware, all of them made of leather, of course.
