'What Not To Wear': TLC Series on Style & Fashion
By: Lucy Oblena
Apr 14, 2003/ FW/ --- You've heard lots of fashion advice on 'what to wear', what is in,
and what is out... How about the fashion pitfalls you need to avoid?
Produced by BBC America
and shown at TLC, the new series,
'What Not To Wear", is looking at the other side of the mirror when it comes to fashion advice.
Based on the premise that 'there is a fashion victim out there,' hosts Trina Woodall and
Susannah Constantine, find an individual who is willing to undergo a makeover.
Each episode of WHAT NOT TO WEAR focuses on one individual -- male, female,
young or not-so -- whose friends or family have nominated as someone in dire need
of a complete style overhaul.
The 'fashion victim' is then presented with a check for $5,000 and has to agree to
'revamp her wardrobe, but before she can spend a penny, she must agree to hand
over her body, soul and closet.'
TLC, through the "fashion victim's" family and friends secretly films the fashion offender
to catch them in their natural environment so the stylists can evaluate their fashion
foibles.
Then, the stylists confront the person and reveal their plan to teach
them WHAT NOT TO WEAR.
Fashion stylists Stacy London and Wayne Scot Lukas, hired by BBC and TLC for a 10-episode
series convert people from dowdy to dashing.
They sort through the person's current wardrobe, exposes them to a literal 360-degree view
of themselves, and provides them with rules for maximizing their best assets and personal style.
Armed with these guidelines and $5,000, the person hits the shops.
After a consultation with Stacy London and Wayne Scot Lukas on these new clothing choices,
along with a dramatic hair and makeup revamp, viewers will see a complete transformation
and a stunning reveal.
Call it a 'life-changing fashion intervention.'
Stacy London and Wayne Scot Lukas, fashion gurus on their own right, have also been
'changed' by the series WHAT NOT TO WEAR.
Working on WHAT NOT TO WEAR, Stacy London confessed, "I suddenly hate everything I own!
It's because after taking so manypeople shopping, I want to get five grand and get new
stuff too!"
As for Wayne Scot Lukas, he cut off his hair completely.
"Think shaggy surfer 'do, cut it three times in L.A. to get it right. My long hair got
in the way of my face and it was being flipped too many times for my own taste,"
said Wayne Scot Lukas.
"I've noticed what does and doesn't work for me on TV regarding shape
and color," he added.
And as one last word from Lukas, "I have said this before and I'll say it again, the show
isn't about me or my style it is about the participant and the
transformation at hand."
