DALLAS, Aug 10, 2004/ FW/ --- Jeans, tees and denim jackets - basic elements of the American casual look that has become global. Americans conceived that look, so when its time to reinvent and give it a make over, it will also take Americans to do it.
That’s what Marcus Lansden, Creative Director at Gasp has been doing for the past two years, reformulating the basic casual looks that has become so much a part of our everyday lifestyle.
“We wanted to take the core of what is commonly viewed as basic pieces of a wardrobe and completely reinvent them,” explained Lansden.

Taking an ordinary long sleeved top, Lansden gave it elaborated stitching and widened the proportions of the cuff bands. Then he added appliqués, sometimes even tiny ruffles, resulting to a casual elegance that is seen more on fashion items than on basics.
For pants, Lansden used men’s suits as an inspiration and came out with some really sexy and unabashedly feminine trousers.
"This is the benchmark of hip, everyday dressing. Cut close to the body in fabrics that have enough stretch and memory to contour the shape, this collection was put together with an eye toward what's new and exciting," said Lansden.
For Fall 2004, Gasp takes that concept one notch higher. Using plush corduroy pieces pigment-dyed in mid tones and combined with leather or lambskin on jackets and pants, the look can be worn from lunch to an early evening dinner. Its versatility in terms of social situations makes it a perfect piece of clothing to bring for weekend trips where a late lunch date can extend to an early dinner.
Using ribbed and jersey mixes for tops and matching it with stretch velveteens and/or denim jeans and cord trench jackets keep you stylish and warm during those cool fall nights.
Targeted for women from her 20s to 50s, the look is neither avant-garde nor conservative. It’s a mix of personal style and casual chic. The best thing about it, you can wear it season after season, because it does not go out of style. Remember, it is still “basic clothing” with a dash of elegance.
The pieces retail from $50 to $80 for tops, $100 to $150 for bottoms and $150 to $200 for jackets. Available at trend conscious boutiques and fine stores nationwide including Fred Segal and Rebel Sugar in L.A.; E Street Denim in Chicago; and Me & Blue in New York.
