NEW YORK, Feb 14, 2003/ FW/ --- Charles Nolan got it right. To do Anne Klein, you should find
inspiration from the designer herself.
Using Anne Klein's 1969 sketchbook, Charles Nolan turned out a very smart collection last
Tuesday at the Tent in Bryant Park.
To the risk of sounding redundant, the collection looks 'Anne Kleinish'.
Following the current trend of the 1960s theme this season in New York, Charles Nolan
whipped up pleated mini-skirts in bold colors, impecably tailored pant suits and
empire waist coats.
The designer was a little more careful with the use of bold graphics though, very much
unlike Marc Jacobs who went all the way.
And unlike Marc Jacobs whose collection looked so derivative from Courreges of the 1960s,
Charles Nolan's take on Anne Klein was a homage to the house.
Updating the looks and interjecting his own style, Charles Nolan stayed true to the spirit
of the house of being a sportswear brand while keeping up with the mod trend this season.
Mr. Nolan's success at Anne Klein underlines the fact that when a designer takes over a
venerable house, he or she should have a vision.
The designer taking over has two jobs - keep the existing clientele while getting new ones.
Anne Klein's legacy to fashion cannot be understimated and Charles Nolan made sure that
everyone is aware of that.
Let us hope that Nolan's run at Anne Klein, who have seen a its faire share of designers going through a
revolving door be as long as Karl Lagerfeld's run at Chanel.
