A native New Yorker, Anne Klein was born Hannah Golofsky in 1923. She became Anne Klein when she married her
first husband Ben Klein.
In 1948, she co-founded Junior Sophisticates with her husband. Fifteen years later, Anne Klein & Co. and
Anne Klein Studio were established (1965).
Better known as a sportswear designer, Anne Klein revolutionized fashion in her treatment of the "Juniors"
size. Before 1948, "Juniors" was just an extension of the clothes designed for children. The industry
did not recognize that teens had a different outlook for clothes compared to their 12 and under counterpart.
By opening Juniors Sophisticates, Anne Klein transformed "Juniors" into what we see today - more
sophisticated, leaning towards adult fashion. Her work paved the way for a new crop of designers who dedicate
their work towards this market segment.
Anne Klein died in 1974. Her company continued under Donna Karan, Louis Dell'Olio, Richard Tyler, the design team
Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco, and Charles Nolan and Michael Smaldone as head designers.
