Oct 24, 2001/ FW/ --- At the risk of sounding like it is an exaggeration, (after all I'm from
Texas) the Atil Kotuglu show is the most original collection I have seen this season in
New York.
Having catwalkers Jodie Kidd and Lin did not hurt the show either. One thing I can say about
these models. They can really add to the show!
Using textiles produced in his native Turkey, Atil Kutoglu sent a red and white collection
to the runway. Red and white stripes, either vertical or diagonal, red background with stars
and a crescent moon, ecru with red graphics, either embroidered or applique were the main
fare of the show.
My favorite was the floor length frock with an assymetrical hemline worn by Jodie Kidd. It could
either be used as a wedding gown or a ball gown. And if you're 18, you can even use it in your
cottillon.
Remaining true to his homeland, the designer also took inspiration from the Turkish culture
sending clothes with mideastern influence. The short crop jacket with red piping and the
matching pants with diagonal red stripes from the waist to the thigh came straight out of
Arabian nights tales updated for the third millennium of course!
Pants were either pencil cut or loose. Either way, you can easily see that Atil Kotuglu has
been very generous with the use of the fabric. The stripes all matched at the seams! That is
one thing that is hard working with stripes and/or graphical elements in fabric.
A couturier has to be able to have enough material so that the print or stripe all match at
the seams. That also measure the designer's technical expertise. And with this collection
of stars and stripes, Atil Kotoglu show that he has mastered cutting techniques!
