DALLAS, Feb 16, 2004/ FW/ --- Baby Phat runway shows are always high-octane turbo-charged events that the fashion flock looks forward to every season. Kimora Lee Simmons knows how to play it just right. And this season, the former-model-turned -designer raised the notch a little higher by presenting the real clothes that will hit the stores come fall.
Known for its ‘fantasy’ runway shows, one of the grievances about Baby Phat is that not one of those outfits shown reaches the consumers, i.e., the look book presented to the retail buyers is an entirely different collection.
That is an accepted practice in the fashion world, but Baby Phat with its hip-hop clientele who are known to be one of the more fashion forward market segments wants to ‘get their hands on what they see.’
And this season, Kimora Lee Simmons obliged her fans by presenting the ‘real clothes’ that will be on their look books.
So, the delicious caramel hot pants paired with a sleeves leather jacket trimmed with faux fur and the blue gray low-rise shorts and long sleeve 6-button jacket cropped at the waist to reveal the navel will be seen on the streets or in the clubs frequented by hip-hop aficionados.
Never straying away from the formula that made the label successful, Kimora Lee presented a very tight and well-edited collection. And that will surely bring a smile to the faces of the powers-that-be at Kellwood who will be Phat Farm and Baby Phat’s parent company in the near future.
