NEW YORK, Jan 31, 2002/ --- Following in the tradition of downtown lines like Daryl K. and Alice Roi,
Benjamin Cho have racked enough attention, acclain and starlet associations in the past year
to assure New York a bright fashion future.
Cho, who's been in the business for seven seasons, has intricately cut and crafted himself
into a young couturier.
Now, with two frenetic weeks to go until the fall 2002 shows, we visited with Benjamin Cho
to ask him a set of carefully crafted battery of questions to find out what makes her
inner-designer smile.
What you're wearing right now:
BC: Black corduroys.
Your mindset going into N.Y. fashion week:
BC: Surprisingly calm. A bit weathered.
The best thing, both professionally and personally, that could come out of your show:
BC: A smile on my face. Sometimes it's a hard thing to do.
Your ideal front-row guests:
BC: My closest friends.
The next big trend:
BC: I don't want to know.
What every woman should have in her closet:
BC: Anything they want. In an ideal world, no fur and nothing sweatshop-made.
Your favorite place of inspiration:
BC: My head.
The stupidest thing fashion editors have said about you:
BC: Lies.
The smartest thing fashion editors have said about you:
BC: Nothing.
Your definition of success in the fashion world:
BC: Truly enjoying it without being too self-indulgent.
The designer, artist or musician you most identify with:
BC: Artists Brian Degraw and Leo Fitzpatrick. (Or, just Brian & Leo.)
Your favorite self-designed piece:
BC: My first prom outfit, freshman year. (I was the younger man!) It was very goth. Black velvet. Buckles and straps everywhere.
Why you started designing:
BC: When I was 7 years old, I would redesign costumes for characters of TV shows, books, movies, superheroes, my mom, everything!!!
What you'd be doing if you weren't designing:
BC: Teaching or working with a non-profit organization. In my spare time, I would still keep experimenting in the arts and music and probably make a few outfits here and there.
Benjamin Cho Fall 2002 Collection will show Tuesday February 12, 12pm at The Japan Society (333 E. 47th Street).
