"Gotta Go, My Dress Is Calling..."
Jun 7, 2002 /FW/ --- Avant garde designer Cat Chow unveiled Nokia's latest fashion product,
the Nokia 8265 wireless phone, to a crowd of celebrity guests and fashion trendsetters in
New York City last night during Gen Art/ Nokia Styles 2002.
Chow, a Gen Art alumnus, created a garment fashioned from Nokia mobile phone covers as a
showcase piece for the awards competition.
The event, hosted by celebrity
stylist Phillip Bloch, premiered 30 new cutting-edge designers selected from
more than 700 entries globally.
A winner of the Gen Art/Nokia Styles 2000 competition, Chow is known in
Chicago and New York City fashion circles for creating her own "fabric" from a
spectrum of everyday objects including items such as buttons, money and glass.
Her latest piece is no exception, incorporating more than 228 orange and blue
iridescent Nokia Xpress-on™ color covers into a peasant-style design.
Chow and Nokia see the design as a statement toward the changing role of the
mobile phone, from voice communications device, to highly personalized
accessory--or piece of art -- inspired by the individual who carries or wears
it.
Dress Facts:
- 228 orange & blue iridescent color covers
- 75 hours to construct
- 1000+ closing rings to connect parts
- Weighs 9 lbs.
